So, first go to a few stores that sell bedding. Once you have your colors and the style of comforter or bedspread nailed down, the rest will be a walk in the park.
Pillows, fabrics, rugs, furniture, art and, of course, paint, chosen to either complement or contrast your new comforter or bedspread can (in a weekend) transform this room to a place that just feels right for you or both of you.

Pick window shades, drapes or curtains which (again) match or compliment your bed cover. Its a good idea to have these also block or shade the sun and other lights.
For Instance, a Tuscan look might have a double drape with the outer one a deeper rustic shade of the inner one. Or simply line lightweight drapes with a backing in a dark color. A double drape rod (usually for drapes over sheers) could have both sets shades of the other.
Throw rugs can also make a huge design impact. Whether you have wood or carpet, the right rug(s) can bring everything together.
Make sure the design and colors work with the bedspread, as its not good to have colors or patterns that are almost the same. And don't buy into the idea that you shouldn't put rugs over carpet. If you like it, that's all that counts.
