Less mow! Want to save water, gas, and electricity? Cut back on the size of your precious green grass yard! Start your design by laying out a garden hose in a gentle curve or your own design and mow that shape to make certain its easy and "works" for you. Yard grass is very thirsty and expensive to maintain, so obviously, the smaller the better.

The image (right) shows slow-grow evergreens, small rock and drought-tolerant plants occupying nearly half the space. Half the grass = half the work = half the expense.

If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, consider the area that each sprinkler head sprays: Plug heads you don't now need, or convert them to supply a good drip irrigation system for the new planting beds or ground-cover. Find plants that need very little water.

Am I xeriscaping yet? Landscaping on a budget goes beyond cheap plants. Some plants require more water than others, and water is a precious commodity. Drought-tolerant plants are better at fending for themselves, which lowers your water bill. Selecting drought-tolerant plants is called "xeriscaping" (pronounced zee-ra-skāp-ing). Memorize "drought tolerant" for when you go to the nursery.

Watch that water! Curious about how much water you're using when you water your yard? Trying to comply with the current water-use restrictions? Would you like to be able to measure your water usage so you can work to improve your water efficiency? The image (right) is a $10 device (by Water Watch) that shows how much water (in gallons) is going through a hose. It works on all garden hoses and can be reset to zero at any time the water is off. Because of the economy and the surge in "green consciousness" this and many other new water regulating, spraying and metering devices have recently hit the market. Big Boxes as well as lots of hardware stores, landscaping supply stores and nurseries carry them.

Mow exercise!! Unless you have a fairly large yard, why not give some thought to a reel lawn mower. Reel lawn mowers are an eco-friendly alternative to gas-powered lawnmowers. Great exercise and an overall workout for leg, arm, back, abs and muscles you don't know you even have right now. Since they are muscle-powered, there's zero carbon footprint. If not for you, how about giving some thought to electric or battery powered mowers. These pop up all the time in classifieds and Craigslist.
