MIAMI, June 29 /PRNewswire/ — KSL Recreation Corp. has announced today a multi-million dollar, four-phase complete renovation of the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami. The initial stages of the program are already underway at a cost in excess of $15 million, according to Hans Turnovszky, the resort’s general manager. KSL also owns and operates La Quinta Resort and Club and PGA WEST in southern California.
“When KSL took over Doral earlier this year, the company realized that in order to restore this property to its rightful position as one of America’s premier golf and recreation resorts, a major investment in the facilities would be required,” Turnovszky said. “When completed Doral will not only have a complete facelift but extensive additions and improvements to its infrastructure, energy management capabilities and other back-of-the-house facilities necessary to provide our guests with the very best leisure experience.”
The renovation program will include remodeling all rooms and public areas, redesign of restaurants and the clubhouse, substantial improvements and modernization of all golf courses starting with the famous Blue Monster, and continual refurbishment of interior and exterior spaces and landscaping.
In the initial stages of the program, 207 of Doral’s 699 rooms will be rebuilt and refurbished. Expected to be finished by the start of this year’s winter season (with the first collection of new rooms available by mid-autumn), the new accommodations will reflect the colors, beauty and ambiance of South Florida’s natural landscape and traditional architecture. Clustered in lodges and surrounded by the palms, ficus trees, flowers and other native Floridian flora, the rooms offer luxurious appointments and amenities in a setting of privacy and serenity. The architect for the renovations is Miros W. Scheib, of Coral Gables, who is affiliated with Jeff Howard & Associates, the interior design firm chosen to oversee interior refurbishments.
Also in the first stages of the renovation, Doral’s ground level restaurants will be redesigned to create the Champions Bar & Grill across from the resort’s pro shop and Terraza, an informal Italian trattoria, and lower level kitchens will be redone.
“The great advantage we have at Doral is that we can implement an ambitious renovation project without ever bothering the guests,” said Dennis Almendares, KSL’s project director at Doral. “Because of the resort’s layout, we can completely rebuild one lodge at a time without affecting guests in other accommodations. And, due to extensive space and already existing restaurants and other public areas, we can work on one area of the resort without disrupting activities elsewhere.”
Renovations of the remaining rooms at Doral will be completed by 1997, with 100-180 completed each year. In addition, the resort’s existing Provare Restaurant will be redesigned to become the casually elegant Windows, specializing in seafood and views of Doral’s four golf courses. Rousseau’s, the existing cocktail lounge, will be opened up to create a lobby bar. In the final stages of the program, all meeting rooms, the extensive lobby areas and Doral’s clubhouse, which has welcomed all the greats of professional golf, will be redone.
In addition to over $1 million invested in new kitchens, other back-of-the-house improvements will include new air-conditioning, a new electronic security system and a comprehensive energy management system for the property. External improvements will include landscaping, resurfacing of drives and walkways, new canopies, and the painting of all buildings.
Starting in April, 1995, Doral will embark on a major renovation of its golf courses. Built in an era when woods were woods and not metal, the courses will be not only beautified but modernized. Beginning with the Blue Monster, home of the famous Doral Ryder Open, the program will include re-grassing the fairways and greens and bringing out-dated bunkers on fairways and around the greens back into competitive play. State-of-the-art irrigation and watering systems will also be installed. Following completion of renovations of the Blue course, the Red, White and Gold also will be improved, with work taking place on one course a year so as not to disrupt golf activities at the resort.
The Doral Golf Resort and Spa currently offers four championship golf courses, a par-3 executive course, lighted driving range, comprehensive pro shop, a 15-court tennis complex, Olympic-size swimming pool, four restaurants/lounges, lakes for freshwater fishing, basketball and volleyball courts, jogging trail, bicycle paths and other recreational facilities. The Spa, a short walk from the resort’s main building, is internationally acknowledged as a world-class retreat, offering sophisticated equipment, instruction and treatments in fitness and beauty.
The Doral is located at 4400 Northwest 87th Avenue, Miami, FL 33178. The telephone number is 305-592-2000.
