How can I decorate my steps in my home?

The first thing people see when they walk through a front door often is the interior steps going up to the second floor of the home. Many people carpet the stairs or leave the bare wood exposed. You have many options for creating a new and unusual look with interior stairs.

Interior Stairs

The options for decorating interior stairs are endless. The style that you choose greatly depends on the style of the interior of your home. Create a budget that allows you to achieve the look that you are going for. Carpet is a traditional choice but if you are not skilled at installing carpeting on stairs, this can be tricky. It is worth the investment to have the carpet professionally installed.

Another idea is to sand the stairs down to the bare wood and re-stain with either a lighter or darker stain. You will want to place several coats of polyurethane on the stairs to help protect and seal the stain.

You can also sand the stairs down and, if the wood’s natural color is desirable to you, place a light protectant on the stairs. This tends to give the steps more of a natural feel and look.

Try going to your craft store and purchasing stencils. You can stencil on the steps using any designs and colors of your liking. Use stars and moon stencils and make sure to seal with a polyurethane type of sealant. If the odors of polyurethane bother you, you can purchase an Eco-friendly product that omits less odors in your home when applied.

You can also take special dates that hold memories for you and write them on the steps. Use a special stenciling set for this. You can invite your friends and family over to help with the project so that it is extra special.
