You want to design fashion from home? Well, if you ever watched that Bravo show whose name I've forgotten, you'll notice that most of the contestants are already designers.
Fashion, like a lot of the arts, is a business which relies heavily on freelancers. You usually learn the business by going to school, by working your way up within a corporation, or both.
There are little jobs everywhere. If you haven't helped people in your area, network and check your local Craig's List. You'll find jobs which will hopefully get you things you can put in your portfolio. Then try to find a designer of some sort to work for. I don't mean on seventh avenue. That is a very demanding job and the gossip I know about it I can probably get sued for repeating. There are sportswear and other companies all over the place who are looking for designers.
If you work in an office for a while you will learn enough of the procedures — and frankly the tricks — so you will have a much easier time being a free lancer. As an East Coast Chauvenist, I can assure you that then moving to the new york area and getting connections on seventh avenue — or to any big fashion center — can be helpful: once you can deal with people on the basis of contracts in writing.
All this is called paying your dues.
