How to Create Mother-in-Law Quarters in a Remodel

Has your mother-in-law moved into your home with you, your spouse, and your children? This does not have to a major living arrangement problem for you, your family, and your mother-in-law. In fact, you can turn this new living arrangement into a remodel for your home. Have you been wanting to upgrade your home, but just did not know what to do? Well, we have your answer; remodel your home with mother-in-law quarters. This can be a simple project to undertake if you hire a contractor to do the remodel instead of doing it yourself, which can turn into a major hassle.

Meet with Contractor to Discuss Plans

After you hire a contractor to perform the work you should meet with him or her to discuss a plan for the remodel. Have a list of ideas ready for the contractor. He or she will be able to tell you which ideas are actually doable and which ones cannot happen no matter what. The contractor will take your ideas, return to the office, and draw up floor plans for the remodel. The next meeting will occur to discuss the plans the contractor came up with for remodel home with mother in law quarters. At this stage, you can reject anything in the plans you do not like and add anything the contractor might have left out that you originally wanted in the remodel.

The Mother-In-Law Design

When remodeling a home with the new quarters for your mother-in-law, with your mother-in-law, make sure you include all of the necessary amenities for someone who is markedly older than you are. Those amenities include a bathroom with a shower, a family room, a bedroom, a walk-in closet and a foyer. The mother-in-law quarters should also have its own front door for guests and family members of the mother-in-law to access instead of traipsing through your house when they are only visiting your mother-in-law.

Let your mother-in-law have the say in every aspect of the remodel since she will be living in the new quarters almost 24 hours per day. The new quarters obviously do not need to include a kitchen, a laundry room, more than one bathroom or a basement since the main area of the house will have all of these amenities for the mother-in-law to use. Not having these amenities will also help the mother-in-law save money on the remodel, which could be a major help if she is living on a fixed income.

On the other hand, the mother-in-law might prefer quarters separate from your home, which means she will be living on your property but in a separate building. This will cost more, since a kitchen and laundry room will need to be added, but it still provides your mother-in-law with a feeling of freedom and independence.
