Is there sales tax on home remodeling in New York?

The state of New York offers a capital improvement tax exemption under which a contractor does not collect sales tax from his customers for any capital improvement work, as long as the customer fills out a Certificate of Capital Improvement. Contractors still collect sales tax for repair and maintenance work.
