NATURAL LANDSCAPING PLANS

Today, landscaping plans are much easier than in the past. Not only are there new tools and materials, but natural is "in." Now it doesn't take a huge budget to make your yard look great! Creating a natural plan in your yard is both environmentally beneficial and visually stimulating for you and everyone else.

Your plans should absolutely include local and drought resistant plant varieties. These will be less expensive and sometimes nearly maintenance free. Visit local nurseries and talk to growers and the gardening people at the big boxes.

Know which parts of your yard receives sun, are partially shaded and what type of soil you have. Draw a "plot plan" of the space you're working on. Spending a little time researching could save lots of time and trouble.

Select plants that are labeled "low maintenance" and "drought resistant." You'll save water, be more Earth friendly and decrease the amount of maintenance needed. You should also look for perennials (plants that come back year after year) versus annuals. An extra benefit with perennials is they multiply, making it possible to expand your landscaping plans over the years without purchasing extra plants.

In fact, your landscaping plans actually don't have to cost anything at all. Today, you have the benefit of growing native plants, going online and swapping those "pass along plants" to other like minds. There are millions of people swapping, sharing information and joining in plant swap forums. Search "plant swap" using the Google Custom Search Box (upper right).

Find other landscapers and gardeners in your area at "plant swaps" and swap those plants as they multiply and mature. This is a free and fun way to get great plants to add visual interest to your yard! Search "plant swap your city" (ie. plant swap boise id).

Natural landscaping plans have definite benefits. By eliminating some—or all—of your incredibly thirsty lawn and planting native plants, you improve the water and air quality, help reduce toxins, and you'll reduce the need for mowing and watering. Watering your grass and mowing every week is a large contributor to pollution, so natural landscaping is green in more ways than one.
