Make Your Own Low Flow Toilet!

Like to have a greener toilet, save water and save money? Here’s a FREEBIE idea that may work … and may not. If you have an old toilet (one of those 3+ gallons-per-flush jobs) then try this. It’ll only take a few minutes to see if it’ll work … and if it does, it’s free and you’ll save money forever!

Fill a plastic half gallon container with clean rocks or sand and water. Remove the paper or plastic label on the outside of the container.

The idea is to make the container heavier than the water in the toilet tank so it doesn’t move around and possibly get in the way of the flushing mechanism, so put a few inches of small rocks in before filling with water.

Seal the container tight and place the container in the tank (image right). Remember to carefully lower it into the water, then replace the lid on the tank.

The New York Times reported that, since a sealed half gallon container, used as a water reducer, will save half a gallon on each flush and if you, like most Americans, flush 5 times daily, your family of 5 will save 350 gallons of water every month! That’s over four thousand gallons a year! Imagine if a few million others did the same.

Oh, btw – if you don’t have a plastic half gallon jug, go buy a half gallon of milk or juice, drink it and get busy.
