Old World Style Decorating, or Formal Style, is distinguished by the symmetry of windows, furniture, artwork, and other elements. These are most often arranged in exact pairs on a straight axis around the room. If you love the look of early century mansions, "The Ritz" and the White House, then old world style decorating has drawn you to Formal design.
 If you grew up in such a home, you are probably a little picky about how your home is kept now. Comfort takes a back seat to formality and puffy pillows are on the bed, not the couch.
You may or may not be somewhat "snobby" but you most likely are demanding, which may or not be a bad thing
Elements making it formal in style could be a central focal point, a picture window overlooking a manicured lawn, a fireplace or an expensive sculpture and, of course, furniture Nothing has to look old, but everything should be elegant. Antiques or even well produced reproductions, oriental rugs over hardwoods, oil paintings with elaborate frames, chandeliers, wainscot and rich colors.
You also like elaborate crystal light sconces and wall lighting in just the right places along with ornate hand-carved gilt frames and rich dark woods, highly polished and reflective. These interiors might be called sterile if it weren't for the sensual fabrics.
Plants should be placed in interesting, rich looking containers and your accessories should be shiny metals, plates and vases of china or porcelain, and leather-bound books, perfectly arranged with beautiful bookends.
