THE REFRIGERATOR

... HAS COME A LONG WAY

The refrigerator concept is simple. Cold food stays fresher longer than warm food. The main unit normally stays around 32°-40° and your freezer around 0°, "hard freezing" foods and keeping them edible for months by nearly stopping the spoiling process.

So, not only did the this appliance replace the icebox, but maybe the back-yard garden as well.

TEMPERATURES: Divided into 4 temperature zones:

• FREEZER: 0° F (or -18° C)

• MEATS: 32° F (or 0° C)

• MAIN REFRIGERATOR: 40° F (or 5° C)

• CRISPER: 50° F (or 10° C)

Every unit has a control which allows the owner to adjust the temperatures, but controls are calibrated in increments of 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on, not temperature ranges. So, like a lot of gauges, its best to keep the pointer near the middle of the numbers.

Energy Star Ratings: These are ratings given to appliances which meet or beat the minimum EPA guidelines for Earth friendly manufacturing and operation. Required on appliances.

SIZES: Cubic ft. refers to the area of the interior.

• 2 to 6 cubic ft: Family rm, dorm, 2nd home, boat.
• 9 to 12 cubic ft: Same as above, with freezer.
• 18 to 20 cubic ft: Family of 2 to 3, moderate use.
• 19 to 22 cubic ft: Family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids).
• 21 to 26 cubic ft: Large family, special dietary needs.
• 25 cubic ft and up: Very large groups and needs.

STYLES: 6 different styles available (left), with many features, finishes and exterior textures.

COMPACT: 2 to 6 cu. ft. for true compacts, 9 to 12 cu. ft. for compact top-freezer models.

COUNTER DEPTH: Slim design to fit flush with kitchen counters. Usually 19 to 25 cu. ft.

FRENCH DOOR UNIT: 3 doors - 2 top doors for fridge, slide-out lower freezer. Contemporary, sleek, abundant storage.

SIDE-BY-SIDE: Two doors, freezer beside fridge, stylish and spacious, all the bells and whistles.

BOTTOM FREEZER UNIT: Fridge on top, slide out freezer on bottom,

TOP FREEZER UNIT: The most common type, swing doors on both freezer and fridge, comes in all sizes.

FINAL THOUGHT: The main reason buyers return a refrigerator is because it will not fit within the available space! Since the size of your new refrigerator will be limited by the space you have available, be sure to carefully measure the width, depth and height of that space.

Also, Consider the width of any doorways the appliance must pass through to get to your kitchen. Nothing is more frustrating than waiting expectantly for that brand new (expensive!) appliance to arrive just to have it dollied back to the truck! The next delivery isn't nearly as exciting!
