I'd like to find out where these types of stores actually purchase their furniture and home accessories. Often I think they purchase items and refinish them and sell at a higher price. Where could I go if I wanted to find the pieces and refinish them myself? Particularly interested in San Jose, California/Bay Area.
Here in the Southeast, retailers purchase their items at wholesale through the AmericasMart in Atlanta- it's a wholesale only market/tradeshow exclusive to retailers, designers, etc. These are held all over the country, so there will also be one in your area. They also go to the High Point Market for furniture in North Carolina. Some people do buy pieces to refinish- I look at junk stores, thrift store, parent's attic, yard sales, etc. There are also stores that sell unfinished furniture, but you are paying a retail price there too. The key to what you're seeing in stores is that the retailers have wholesale accounts so they are able to buy at a discount price. This requires a tax ID in most cases, although I have found a few wholesale websites that don't require a tax ID. If you are refinishing them for yourself I would recommend looking at used furniture stores, garage sales, etc. and do your homework on refinishing furniture. HGTV has some resources online for that. I've even seen youtube videos on stuff like that.
